4 easy steps to start a blog
Nail down the details of your blog
Before you do anything, you need to have all the details of your blog nailed out. You can write a blog business plan if you want to, but for now I’ll just stick to the basics so that you can get started as soon as possible!
Some things you’ll want to plan out:
- The name of your blog or website
- The overall topic or goal of your blog
- The categories you’ll write about
Choose your domain name and set up hosting
Once you have your details planned out, it’s time to start get your domain and website! You’ll do this by purchasing hosting for your blog or website to live. There are many options out there, but I prefer Siteground. They have AMAZING customer service and handle all the details. If you choose another company, just please be sure they are not an EIG company as they are known to shut down your website if you get a sudden spike in traffic and have poor customer service.
Visit siteground and signup for hosting
The first thing you will do if you do indeed choose siteground, is signup for hosting! Visit siteground by clicking any of the links provided in this post and click “signup” on the homepage. You will be taken to a page that looks like the one below.
Choose your plan and domain
Next, it’s time to choose the plan you want to go with. I recommend going with the startup plan. You’re just starting out so no reason to get a big plan you don’t need yet! You can always upgrade later if you need to. Click “order now” on the plan you want to sign up for.
On the next page, you’ll choose your domain name. This is the web address where your blog or website will live. For this tutorial, I recommend registering it from siteground. But if you’d like to shop around, you can purchase it for cheaper somewhere else and have it point to siteground. Enter your desired web address and click “proceed”. You’ll be brought to a page that looks like the one below.
Enter your information and complete your purchase
After you choose your domain, you’ll need to enter your information to complete your purchase. This includes your desired login, information about yourself (such as name and address), payment information, and purchase information (such as billing length and extra services you’d like to add). Once you’ve entered in all your information, click “pay now” at the bottom.
Your account is now created! Woohoo!
Install WordPress with your host
First things first, go check your email for those lovely welcome emails by siteground! Included should be your login information for you to access your customer area. Login using your credentials and you’ll be prompted with your setup wizard!
Please note: the images shown below have been supplied by siteground since I cannot access this step myself.
Start the siteground setup wizard
When you first log into your account, you’ll be prompted with a setup wizard. I personally LOVE this feature with siteground. It will walk you through the entire process of getting your website setup and ready to go! I think I opted out of using this myself as I didn’t realize what it did at the time, but I HIGHLY recommend going through it if you’re a new blogger and/or not very tech savvy when it comes to WordPress websites. It will make the process much easier for you.
To get started, click “start a new website” as shown in the image below.
Choose your website preferences
On the very first screen, you’ll be asked what type of website you’re wanting to create as well as what type of software you want to install. As a beginner, this can give you a blank stare as you don’t really know what you’re doing yet. I suggest you select “personal/blog” for the website type and you’re going to select “WordPress” as the software to install. Then you’ll click “proceed” to be taken to the next step.
Install the WordPress software
This is where the fun begins! You’re going to start getting WordPress all setup on your website. The first part is choosing your login details for wordpress. This is different than your login details for your siteground account. Enter the email address you want connected with your WordPress account as well as your username and password. Be sure to choose a somewhat difficult username and password as blogs get hacked occassionally and I’d hate to see that happen to you!
Next, it’s going to ask you to choose a free template to be installed as well. It doesn’t matter what you choose as we will be going over some better options in the next step of this tutorial. Click “get template” on any of them and you should be taken to the last screen indicating setup is complete.
Design and set up your blog
To login to your WordPress dashboard, you’re going to visit yoursite.com/wp-admin but replace the first part with your actual website address of course. When you login, you should see a screen that looks like the one shown below.
If you already have your theme picked out, you can upload it by navigating to appearance > themes > add new > upload theme and uploading your .zip file you have. If you haven’t yet purchased a theme, I’ll be talking about that next.
Choose your theme
First things first, you need the framework for your theme. This is like the body of a car and your child theme will act as the paint on the car, or the leather seat interior. They work together and one cannot work without the other. But not only that, StudioPress is AMAZING!! They have amazing security, great SEO, and endless ways to personalize the themes. They’re a great choice and come highly recommended. Purchase this first and then choose a theme from my favorites listed below! PS: I’m currently using the divine theme as of March 2017.
Install your theme and setup your website
All the hard work is done! The last thing you do is install your theme by uploading your .zip file as explained previously. To setup your website, follow the support files provided by the theme creator. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to start blogging!
Congrats mama, you’ve officially started your own blog! I wish you the best of luck in your new adventure! <3
